In most of the studies on the developmental stages of Islamic studies, there are some findings based on generalizations. In particular, the emergence of the science of tafsir and the nature of scholarly accumulation are not handled independently. In this context, the early data on tafsir are evaluated mostly based on understanding and approach in the field of hadith. It is observed that there is a perception that the information that emerged especially in the early stages of the science of tafsir was transferred to the science of hadith transmission and that science of tafsir was not independent of the science of hadith. However, the historical findings regarding the earliest period together with the first studies on Qur’anic exegesis that reached us reveal that this is not the case in reality. In this context, it should be noted that the emergence of tafsir as a phenomenon and the course it followed in the later stages has a unique channel. When all the available information is taken into account, it is seen that the science of tafsir represents the first stage of Islamic sciences and is an "activity of understanding the Qur'an" that began with the revelation process and was determined by the revelation itself.
