June 23, 2025

The opening panel of the Ḥanafī Reading Workshop, which will take place from June 25 to 28, will be held on Wednesday, June 25 at 2:00 PM at the İSAM Dr. Tayyar Altıkulaç Conference Hall, with the participation of Assoc. Prof. Samy Ayoub, Prof. Murteza Bedir, Prof. Mohammad Fadel, Prof. Sherman Jackson, Prof. Marion Katz, and Dr. Dale Correa.

Focusing on advanced readings in the Islamic legal corpus of the Ḥanafī school, the workshop aims to provide a platform for scholars to share their research built around a set of pre-selected texts, cases, and literary forms. It seeks to critically map Islamic legal writing and open new avenues for deeper analysis of legal authority, reasoning, and authorship.

The opening panel, titled “What are Texts for?”, will feature reflections by the participants on the role and significance of texts in their work, as well as the texts that have shaped their scholarly journeys.

The opening panel is open to interested researchers, while the rest of the workshop is closed to outside participants. The language of the presentations will be English.
